When moving overseas, insuring your personal belongings is a must. We cannot stress the amount of times unintended mistakes and incidents occur that cause breakages, and headaches upon arrival to your new residence; The benefits far outweigh the cost of it.

Cargo Insurance

  • What is cargo insurance, and do I need it for my international move?

Cargo insurance is a type of coverage that protects your personal belongings during transit. While it's not mandatory, we highly recommend it to safeguard your items against unforeseen risks and damages during transportation.

  • What does cargo insurance cover?

Cargo insurance typically covers loss or damage to your belongings caused by accidents, theft, natural disasters, or other unexpected events during transit.

  • Can I purchase insurance directly from CMS Shipping, or do I need to go through a third party?

As your relocation partner, CMS can offer you comprehensive cargo insurance directly, ensuring seamless coverage for your international move.

  • Why should I purchase cargo insurance?

The simple answer is to reduce your exposure to financial loss. Since you're the shipper and receiver of your own goods, it's your responsibility to insure the entirety of your international move. Your personal items, household goods, furniture, art, cars, motorcycles, boats, etc. are cherished goods that may not be easily replaced. Having your assets fully protected will give you peace of mind.

  • Why can't I just rely on the carrier to reimburse my for loss or damage to my goods?

Current transport logistics involve different parties (truck, rail, shipping lines, airlines), and the monetary liability of these carriers is often very limited (i.e., Your cargo travels without full value insurance.)

  • What items can I insure?

You can insure all of your goods or simply those you feel are most important to you. Some items, such as valuable artwork, jewelry, and antiques, may have limited coverage or require special arrangements. Our team will provide guidance on insuring such items separately if needed.

  • How do insurance rates work?

The insurance premium varies depending on whether your goods are professionally packed or not ($1000 deductible versus $750). The rate is a small percentage of the total declared value of the shipment, and not on the weight.

  • Can I insure the shipping costs associated with my shipment?

Yes, you can insure your actual shipping costs, as long as you declare that amount for coverage when insuring the shipment with us. If you do not include the shipping amount in your initial insurance declaration, it will not be covered.

  • Can I use my home insurance for international moves?

It's unlikely; Most home insurance policies have limited coverage for international moves. It's essential to check with your insurance provider to understand the extent of coverage and consider additional cargo insurance for comprehensive protection.

  • What should I do if I need to make a claim?

In the unfortunate event of damage or loss during transit, contact our customer support immediately to initiate the claims process. We'll guide you through the required steps and documentation.
